GGC produces contributing citizens and future leaders for Georgia and the nation. Its graduates are inspired to contribute to the local, state, national and international communities, and are prepared to anticipate and respond effectively to an uncertain and changing world.
Vision
Georgia Gwinnett College will be a premier 21st century liberal arts college where learning will take place continuously in and beyond the confines of the traditional classroom. Its cornerstones will be innovative use of educational technology and a commitment to an integrated educational experience that develops the whole person.
GGC will be a wellspring of educational innovation. It will be a dynamic learning community where faculty engagement in teaching and mentoring students will be the hallmark. It will be a driving force for change in student success. As such, it will be a model for innovative approaches to education, faculty engagement with students, and highly efficient student, facility, and administrative services.
History
In the spring of 2005, the Georgia Legislature and the Board of Regents approved a bold and progressive plan to create the first new state college in Georgia since 1970. Located on the former Gwinnett University Center campus in Lawrenceville, Georgia Gwinnett College is a high tech, four-year institution serving the higher educational needs of Gwinnett County. The college is destined to become a highly innovative higher education learning campus.
The concept of learning and education at the Georgia Gwinnett College is rooted in innovation. GGC offers traditional classroom courses and a blend of "hybrid" courses and on-line learning experiences. Students learn at home, in the classroom, and in the office using the Web and enhanced classroom solutions. All of the classrooms feature innovative, advanced "smart" technology where student education is facilitated by advanced digital systems. Learning is facilitated via a seamless extension of the classroom available across the campus or across the world using educational and information technology platforms.
Founded as the University System's third "state college," Georgia Gwinnett's mission is to provide a range of associate degree programs, as well as a number of bachelor degree programs focused on the economic development needs of Gwinnett County and the surrounding area.
The existing Gwinnett University Center will be phased out as lower-division students from Georgia Perimeter and upper-division students from UGA, SPSU and MCG graduate or transfer to other institutions. Once the transition is complete, the new institution will offer all undergraduate education, with UGA continuing to provide graduate programs and continuing-education courses. Georgia Gwinnett College currently offers junior-level courses and will enroll its first freshman class in the fall of 2007. Degree programs focus on three general areas that are important to meeting the needs of the region and the state: information technology, business, and the health professions.
