How many credit hours are the ESL courses and how many courses will I need to take?
At the high intermediate level (80 level courses), there are 10 credit hours in ESL. At the advanced level (90 level courses), there are 12 credit hours. The number of course and hours that you are required to take depends on your placement scores. You will take your Integrated Skills and Applied Grammar courses as a block, but you may be able to move up in or to exempt Listening & Speaking depending on the results of diagnostic testing at the beginning of the course.
Can I take other courses while I am taking ESL courses?
Yes, there are a limited number of courses that you may take while you are also taking ESL courses, including GGC 1000, Math, Foreign Language, Film, Art, Music and Physical Education. However, each semester, you must be registered for all required ESL courses before you can take any other non-ESL courses.
Can I withdraw from an ESL class and continue to take my other courses?
You may withdraw from an ESL class and remain in your other ESL courses and Student Success math courses. However, you cannot remain in any college level courses unless you are enrolled in at least two other Student Success courses. When you withdraw from an ESL course and you remain in less than two other Student Success courses, you are also withdrawn from all your college level courses. This includes college level math courses.
Do the ESL courses count toward my graduation credit?
No, ESL courses do not count toward graduation. They are required pre-college courses. For that reason, the grades do not count in your GPA (grade point average). However, the courses do count for full-time enrollment status for visa or insurance purposes, and the grades do count in HOPE scholarships and financial aid evaluations.
