Circulating Books

To find books on a given subject, search GIL, the online library catalog.

Perform a Keyword Search when you want to match your term with the same term in a certain field of the database, such as Author, Title, Subject, or Series. You can also attempt to match your term as a Keyword (Title/Subject), which will cause the GIL search engine to look in the Title and Subject fields of the record, or you can try to match your term anywhere in the record by selecting Keyword Anywhere.

Use the Exact Search option if you know the exact term you want to match, such as title, author name, or subject. Also, if you know the beginning part of the term, such as the first word of a title or the first few letters of an author's name, you can use the Exact Search option to find the full form of your term. If you are have trouble finding the material you need using a certain subject term, you can also use Exact Search to find what is called a valid Library of Congress Subject Heading, as well as subheadings for that subject term. For instance, if you attempt to find literary criticism using "Literary Criticism" as a subject term, you will find the the valid Library of Congress Subject Heading for "Literary Criticism" is simply "Criticism".

Electronic Books

In addition to the materials located in the library, GGC provides you with access to some 26,000 full-text electronic books through netLibrary. You can access netLibrary through GALILEO, through GIL, or visit http://netlibrary.com/.

Note: You need to set up a netLibrary account before you can use netLibrary books. However, it is free and only involves filling out a simple form. See our Ebook/netLibrary guide or ask a librarian for more information. netLibrary uses Library of Congress Subject Headings as well, so try the examples given above.

Article Databases

Use GALILEO databases to find articles. The following databases are a good place to start your search.

If you would like to find out if a particular journal is available electronically, use GALILEO's Journals A-Z. Georgia Gwinnett College Library does not subscribe to all of the databases that UGA subscribes to. Therefore, if you are not a UGA student, you may not have access to some of the databases that are presented in the results of a search in the EJL.

  • GALILEO Annals of American History (full-text)
    Published by Encyclopaedia Britannica, Annals of American History includes the full text of over 2000 primary documents in American history, including historical accounts, speeches, memoirs, poems, editorials, landmark court decisions, and cultural criticism. The resource also has multimedia files, including more than 500 pictures and hundreds of video and audio clips of famous speeches. This chronicle may be explored year by year using a timeline dating from 1493 to 2002, browsed by author or topic, or searched by keyword.
  • GALILEO Original Sources (full-text)
    A comprehensive compilation of more than 350,000 primary source documents, complete books, and authentic images.
  • GALILEO JSTOR (full-text) JSTOR provides electronic access to back issues of core journal titles in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences.
  • GALILEO Project Muse (full-text)
    Project Muse provides online access to the full-text of over 100 scholarly journals in the arts, humanities, social sciences, and mathematics.
  • GALILEO Academic Search Premier (full-text) provides abstracts and indexing for over 3,800 publications, as well as full text for over 3,200 scholarly journals and general magazines. Coverage: 1984 – present.
  • GALILEO Research Library (full-text) is a multidisciplinary database that covers more than 1,600 publications. Coverage: 1986-present (citations and abstracts); 1991-present (full text for selected publications).
  • GALILEO Humanities Full Text (full-text)
    Full text articles in the Humanities from Wilson OmniFile.
  • GALILEO Facts on File World News Digest (full-text)
    Essential facts of the news as reported in the major newspapers and news magazines of the U.S., Canada, Britain, Australia, and elsewhere in the world. Coverage Dates: 1940 - present.
  • GALILEO ProQuest Historical Newspapers - The Atlanta Constitution (full-text)
    Full text of the Atlanta Constitution, 1868-1925.
  • GALILEO ProQuest Historic Newspapers - The New York Times (full-text)
    Full text of the complete run of the New York Times, 1851-2001.
  • GALILEO ProQuest Newspapers (full-text)
    Provides full-text access to five major national newspapers. Coverage includes full-text articles but not advertisements, illustrations, or photographs.
  • GALILEO Opposing Viewpoints (full-text)
    This database presents both sides of arguments on controversial topics.
  • GALILEO netLibrary (full-text electronic books)
    netLibrary provides access to over 15,000 electronic books (eBooks), including reference books, scholarly monographs, publications of many university presses, and consumer books that have been converted into digital format. It is possible to perform full-text searches of a single eBook, search thousands of volumes simultaneously, browse topic categories, or read eBooks directly online. Titles may be checked out for on-screen viewing for four hours. NOTE: Each individual user must create a personal user name and password.

Websites

Use caution when selecting web sites to use for research purposes. Search engines such as Google can provide access to web sites relevant to your research, but it is necessary to investigate the authoritativeness of your search results.

Pay attention to certain details:

  • Who created the site?
  • Are their credentials made available?
  • When was the site last updated?
  • What is the purpose of the site?
  • Is the site trying to sell you something or convince you of something?

Associations

  • American Association for State and Local History AASLH was created to serve and support the field of state and local history. It is the only comprehensive national organization dedicated to state and local history.
  • American Historical Association AHA is a nonprofit organization founded in 1884 for the promotion of historical studies, the collection and preservation of historical documents and artifacts, and the dissemination of historical research.
  • American Jewish Historical Society The mission of the American Jewish Historical Society is to foster awareness and appreciation of the American Jewish past and to serve as a national scholarly resource for research through the collection, preservation and dissemination of materials relating to American Jewish history.
  • Historical Society engages in efforts to revitalize the study and teaching of history by reorienting the historical profession toward an accessible, integrated history free from fragmentation and over-specialization.
  • National Center for History in the Schools NCHS has published over sixty teaching units in United States and World History, based on primary sources and taken from government documents, artifacts, journals, diaries, newspapers, magazines, literature, contemporary photographs, paintings, and other art from the period under study.
  • National Council for History Education NCHE is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to promoting the importance of history in schools and in society.
  • National Council for Public History NCPH has a two-fold mission. First, it aspires to make the public aware of the value, uses, and pleasures of history. Second, it seeks to serve the historical community by advising historians about their public responsibilities; helping students prepare for careers in public history; and providing a forum for historians engaged in historical activities in the public realm.
  • Oral History Association Established in 1966, the OHA seeks to bring together people interested in oral history as a way of collecting human memories.
  • Organization of American Historians The OAH is the largest learned society devoted to the study of American history. Founded in 1907 as the Mississippi Valley Historical Association, the OAH promotes the study and teaching of the American past through its many activities.
  • Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations Learned society dedicated to the study, advancement and dissemination of knowledge of American Foreign Relations.
  • Society for History in the Federal Government SHFG was founded in 1979 as a nonprofit professional organization to promote study and broad understanding of the history of the United States Government and to serve as the voice of the federal historical community.
  • Society for Military History The Society is devoted to stimulating and advancing the study of military history. Its membership has included many of the nation's most prominent scholars, soldiers, and citizens interested in military history.
  • Society of American Archivists SAA was founded in 1936 to promote sound principles of archival economy and to facilitate cooperation among archivists and archival agencies.
  • Supreme Court Historical Study Group Founded by Chief Justice Warren E. Burger in 1974, the Group is dedicated to the preservation and dissemination of the history of the Supreme Court of the United States.
  • White House Historical Association The White House Historical Association is a nonprofit institution whose purpose is to enhance the understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of the White House.
  • World Affairs Councils of America World Affairs Councils are a group of 85 non-profit, non-partisan organizations with 484,000 participants and 28 affiliated organizations. It reaches over 20 million people each year through its 2,500 events, radio, TV, and school programs. It is the largest international affairs nonprofit organization in the United States.

  • AMDOCS- Documents for the Study of American History Contains text versions of documents that impact American History beginning with the writings of Christopher Columbus through modern times.
  • American Civil War Resources This provides extremely comprehensive links to diaries, newspaper articles, gateways to other Civil War sites.
  • American Memory This online resource compiled by the Library of Congress includes documents, films, manuscripts, photographs, and sound recordings that tell the American story.
  • Archives of the West This site provides a library of primary source materials on the history of the American West.
  • Chronology of U.S. Historical Documents Created by the University of Oklahoma, this site provides digitized text of documents from the Magna Carta in 1215 to the State of the Union Address of 2004.
  • Digital Electronic Texts for the Africana Library at Cornell University The Africana Library provides a bibliographic reference and referral center by providing access to African and African American resources including a digital collection.
  • Documenting the American South Documenting the American South is a collection of sources on Southern history, literature, and culture from the colonial period through the first decades of the 20th century.
  • Making of America This site provides a digital library of primary sources in American social history from the antebellum period through reconstruction. It is particularly strong in the subject areas of education, psychology, American history, sociology, religion, science, and technology.
  • National Archives and Records Administration Contains images of major US historical documents and gives detailed advice on searching the NARA archives in the national and regional libraries.
  • Nineteenth Century Documents Project This collection includes accurate transcriptions of many important and representative primary texts from nineteenth century American history, with a special emphasis on regional issues.
